In the newly released deleted scene of “Thor: The Dark World,” Loki was able to wield his brother’s hammer, the mjolnir.

In the clip, his rise to the throne as the new king of Asgard has been met with cheers from its citizens. On his side is his mother, Figga (Rene Russo) who has died when the elves launched in attack. “I’m giving the people what they want,” Loki says.

“Cast enough illusions and you risk forgetting what is real,” Figga says back as the scene reveals that the coronation is just a figment of Loki’s imagination. The montage foreshadows the end of “Thor 2” where Loki has successfully usurped the throne of Asgard while posing as Odin.

The scene is a promotional clip to hype the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 2 Blu-ray collection.

“Thor 2” started with Loki imprisoned for his war crimes in “Avengers.” The film showed Loki’s ability and penchant to create illusions in order to amuse himself.

Mjolnir literally means “that which smashes.” It is best known as the hammer wielded by the Norse god of Thunder. In the comics, the mjolnir was made out of the core of the star that has exploded. The mjolnir is intimately related to Thor’s history. It has a ‘worthiness’ enchantment which prevents it from being wielded by anyone who is ‘not worthy.’

In the film “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Vision was deemed ‘worthy’ to lift the mjolnir because of his apparent noble spirit and intentions. Loki, who has served as the main villain in “Thor” and “Avengers” film tricked Odin Son in “Thor: The Dark World” to rise in power.

In the graphic novels, Loki was found to be worthy to wield the hammer for a brief period when he was hit by the reversion spell of Scarlet Witch. Shortly after he returned to his normal self, he lost the ability.
