Saturday night saw the premier of latest addition of Lifetime-movie series in the form of Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B. The biopic was based on the life of the American singer and dancer who rose to popularity when she was still in her teens and died suddenly and mysteriously in a plane crash.

Wall Street Journal told that the biopic was surrounded by controversies since the announcement was made about its production. The critics are blaming Lifetime movie group of producing low quality, untrue and irrelevant biopics, just like The Brittany Murphy Story.

The authenticity of the movie based on the singer's life was further a debatable topic as the family of the actress refused to give the Lifetime required clearance to use the dead singer's music in the movie. The biopic is directed by Wendy Williams and has chronicled the short life of the talented singer from her childhood popularity, alleged affair with R.Kelly and the plane crash which ultimately engulfed her.

VH1 is claiming that this biopic should never have been made as most of the movie is quite insulting. Although, the lead actress Alexandra Shipp has done full justice to the role as she totally looks and feels like the controversial singer, the movie in whole fails to depict her essence.

VH1 although agrees that the biopic has managed to grasp and show few things of her life in good way. Like, the singer was in full control of her career, despite her young age. She was not pushed by either of her parents and wanted to make a mark of herself in the show business.

Her family was portrayed in a good light and is shown as extremely supportive and loving, unaffected by the sudden rise in fame of the singer. Apart from that, the movie is being criticized by various experts for weak casting except the lead actress, not paying much attention to her movie career and not showing the reaction which invoked after the death of the singer.

Also, a major and secret episode of Aaliyah's life is shown in murky way in the movie. Her alleged involvement with R. Kelly who produced her debut album at the age of 15 is shown as a budding true love which was cut short by her parents. The movie nowhere mentioned that when Kelly met Aaliyah for the first time, she was just 12 and he was already a widely rumoured of pursuing illegal sexual relationships with underage girls, as told by WBEZ91.5.
