LG Electronics has announced its first modular smartphone the LG G5's release date in the US will fall in early April.

The LG G5 will be available from major US carriers including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon, confirmed LG. Retailers like Best Buy, Best Buy Mobile Stores and B&H will ship the LG G5 in the US.

LG will introduce its “Friends” add-ons with the G5, which enables the device to be converted into a DSLR style camera, a mobile virtual reality viewer and more. Select companion devices and sales channels will also be available starting in April, the company added.

The successor to the LG G4, the G5 will sport a 5.3-inch Quad HD Quantum Display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels.

Other LG G5 specs include a Snapdragon 820 processor paired with 4GB of RAM, 32GB of in-built storage with memory expansion capacity up to 2TB, a 2,800 mAh battery coupled with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 functionality and dual rear camera module with a standard 16-megapixel sensor along with an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens.

“It's clear from the consumer polls being conducted by the media that people are incredibly excited about the phone and we're very proud of the practical innovations in the G5 and Friends as well,” said Morris Lee, senior vice president and head of North American sales and marketing LG Electronics MobileComm's.

The LG G5 price and availability will be announced in the coming weeks. It will be available in Silver, Titan or Pink, depending on the carrier.

For a limited time period, LG will offer a free extra battery module and charging cradle with all purchases.

In Canada, LG G5 will arrive on April 8, with the phone sold at major Canadian carriers including Bell, Telus and Rogers. Regional carriers like Eastlink, MTS, SaskTel, Videotron and Wind Mobile will also ship the smartphone in Canada, announced LG.

Meanwhile, Amazon UK started taking pre-orders for LG G5 at £529 (AU$1005) and its website mentions that the device will also be available from April 8, 2016.
