Leonardo DiCaprio will win an Oscar, at least that’s what many hope for. The American actor is the favourite to win the Academy Award for Best Actor, not just because he was superb in “The Revenant,” but also because the Internet is already preparing the memes to go with the moment.

There’s no argument that the other nominees for the trophy – Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”), Matt Damon (“The Martian”), Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”) and Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl”) – are all strong contenders. However, DiCaprio’s name is making the loudest noise this season, with the whole of the Internet community rooting for him.

This isn’t the first time DiCaprio has been nominated for an Oscar. He was nominated as early as 1993 for Best Supporting Actor for his role as a mentally handicapped young man in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.” He also almost took home the gong for Best Actor for his starring roles in “The Aviator,” “Blood Diamond” and “The Wolf of Wall Street” in 2005, 2007 and 2014 respectively.

He lost, though graciously, all those times. And the Internet took notice. He has since become the subject of funny and oftentimes well-meaning memes that either show how desperate DiCaprio was to win an Oscar or how deserving he was.

According to Knowyourmeme.com, the memes took flight in January 2012 when a gif from the 2012 Golden Globe Awards emerged showing the 41-year-old A-lister looking unhappy while he was clapping for someone else’s win. This led netizens to believe he was feeling sad for his own lack of Academy Award trophy. Since then, DiCaprio became a favourite target of memes about Oscar losses and misses.

Funny or Die also created a parody of DiCaprio’s 2011 film “J. Edgar,” depicting the actor’s quest to obtain an Oscar.

This year’s Oscars, though, DiCaprio will be triumphant, as many critics think so. And he has to win; the Internet is already preparing memes to celebrate his “inevitable” win. And if by the most unfortunate event that he still missed that golden statuette, there are memes already up online as well.

Despite the controversies the Oscars is facing this year, people are tuning in to watch the show just to see if DiCaprio will indeed finally get his due. He has already won several Best Actor awards for his role as Hugh Glass in “The Revenant,” including the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes, but it’s his potential win at the Academy Award that has got people anticipating.

The 88th Academy Awards will air live on Sunday in the US and at 12:30 p.m. AEDT on Monday on Nine in Australia. A primetime broadcast will be at 9:45 p.m.
