Leonardo DiCaprio is known for his commitment towards his work, but this time the actor has gone above and beyond the call of duty just to get into the skin of his character for his upcoming film “The Revenant.” DiCaprio has revealed that he ate raw bison liver and even slept in dead animals for the Alejandro González Iñárritu-directed film.

The Hollywood actor and activist also narrated the hardships that the cast members including Tom Hardy (John Fitzgerald), Domhnall Gleeson (Andrew Henry) and Will Poulter (Jim Bridger), had to face during the shooting of the movie. DiCaprio said that the biggest challenge in shooting “The Revenant” was spending nine months in the remote and icy areas of Canada as well as Argentina. He said that living under tough conditions have changed him in many ways.

“The Revenant” is a biographical western thriller film. It tells the story of Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) who is attacked by a bear while he was on a hunt in the Dakota Territory. Unfortunately, his companions rob him and even kill his son. But Hugh survives the attack and decides to trek for 200 miles to find the murderer of his son and seek revenge against those who have wronged him. The movie is based on Michael Punke's novel of the same name, which was released in 2002.

“It’s epic poetry, an existential journey through nature, and this man finding a will to live against all odds. Yet he changes, nature changes him and I think those elements changed him while we were doing the movie,” DiCaprio said during an interview with Yahoo.

The 40-year-old actor also said that he was under constant threat of hypothermia as he endured freezing cold weather while shooting at some of the film's locations. When asked about the difficulty of the shoot and how some people reportedly couldn't continue on, he had this to say.

“Look, what we were trying to pull off was so incredibly ambitious, and [Alejandro] is vigilant and incredibly specific about what he wants up on screen, and he won’t accept anything less,” DiCaprio said in the same Yahoo interview.

He didn't exactly know the intricate details of what went on in the other departments, but he said that the people he saw there were working really hard and giving their all to make this project and Alejandro's vision come to life.

"The Revenant" is made with a budget of $95 million (approximately AU$130 million), according to Forbes. It is slated for a limited theatrical release on Dec. 25 in the United States. It will be released worldwide on Jan. 8, 2016.
