Lenovo’s LaVie Z is made up of a magnesium-lithium alloy, which is actually much lighter than the material that most premium laptops are made of today. It is incredibly light – with many users initially assuming that the device just might be made of plastic.

The LaVie Z is an amazingly light laptop with a 13-inch screen display. Although it is not the first slim laptop to be launched in today’s tech market, it is a bit more expensive than its competitors. Those who have already had their hands on this particular device have commented that the battery life is not impressive and its keyboard has made typing somewhat frustrating, as pointed out by CNET.

The device weighs only 1.9 pounds yet it contains one of today’s most powerful chipsets, the new fifth generation low voltage Intel Core i7 processor. This particular feature has made the Lenovo LaVie Z such a premium device as it runs on such a powerful chip in a very slim and light system.

Apart from the Core i7 and the ultra-light material, it also has 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD, all at $1,499. Sadly, the Lenovo LaVie Z remains unavailable to the UK and Australia to date.

Its price tag might be costly, but it is actually only $200 more than the 12-inch MacBook that Apple is boasting, despite being a lot lighter. The lauded MacBook from the Cupertino-based tech giant is 2.04 pounds against LaVie Z’s 1.9 pounds. Plus, Lenovo’s new high end laptop model also sports a larger screen and a more powerful processor, in addition to having all standard connections and ports that cannot be found in the MacBook, which only has USB-C connection.

One particular feature that has the MacBook in the lead will be its battery life. The LaVie Z can only reach up to less than eight hours, while the MacBook will reportedly reach up to 12 hours. However, the Lenovo Shop has insisted that LaVie Z can actually reach up to nine hours, depending on the laptop's activity.

Latin Post has also pointed out that the right shift key was made smaller, which would reportedly make typing a bit annoying for many. Instead of sporting a standard rectangular shape, the key is now a square shape, just like the rest of the keys.

The LaVie Z is actually a collaborative project between Lenovo and known computer-maker NEC. Their partnership began in 2011, allowing these two different tech companies to sell Lenovo units as NEC-branded PCs in the Japanese tech market.
