Jackson, 31, is the first Australian woman to be named flag bearer in 20 years. Diver Jenny Donnet was given the same honor in Barcelona in 1992.

She is a 3-time Olympian with three silver medals under her belt.

"This moment makes me feel like nothing's impossible," Jackson told reporters.

"When Nick Green [Australia's chef de mission] asked me I thought 'why?' It is a great honor," she said, later adding, "I can't think of anything that would ever top this. Obviously a gold medal would be awesome, but I feel like this is something that will never happen again."
