Lady Gaga’s controversial song “Princess Die” was dropped from her new album. The ballad, which has been inspired by the late Princess Diana, was supposed to be included in her third studio LP “ARTPOP,” but record company bosses pressured her to drop it.

The 27-year-old Grammy Award-winning artist wrote the song in 2011, first performing it during her concert at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne in June 2012. She also sang it at the Twickenham Stadium in London during her “Born This Way Ball” tour in September of the same year.

She had wanted to include it in her new album, which she has just released on Wednesday, November 6, but, given its unfavourable reception from her UK fans, her record company told her to leave it out.

“Lady Gaga was passionate about Princess Diana and, though she admitted it wasn’t her best work, she still wanted it on the album,” a source told the Daily Mirror.

“But after the adverse reaction it got from fans in the UK when she sang it at her gigs last year, the record company bosses stepped in. They persuaded her to remove it from the album to keep the peace.”

Reports speculated that record bosses feared that the song, which is understood to have a suicidal theme, would incite further controversy due to the sensitive issue of Diana’s death.

Another report claimed that the song just “wasn’t as good” as the others in the album, that’s why it was excluded.

Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, told the crowd in her London show, “I’m gonna sing a song but I’m gonna predict controversy but I don’t care I’m gonna do it anyway.”

She continued, “This song is very close to my heart. And I’m quite hoping that the people here in the United Kingdom understand the intention and the love behind this song. I would say that since I was a very young girl, the People’s Princess was the most important person in my mother and my life growing up. Princess Diana.

“I wrote this song about Princess Diana. I wrote this song about myself. I wrote this song about Amy [Winehouse]. I wrote it about Whitney [Houston],” she explained, naming other female artists who have passed away.

There are different variations of lyrics of the song, and Gaga has played a slightly different version of it every time she played it.

“I’ll probably play that song a little bit differently every night,” she explained during her concert in Melbourne. I think I probably have 8000 lyrics for that song and I’ve just cut them up.”

Although “Princess Die” did not make the cut for “ARTPOP,” it is expected to be released through the album’s app soon.
