Beautiful Creatures star, Alice Englert has been hailed as Australia’s Kristen Stewart after nabbing the 2013 drama, fantasy-romance film called Beautiful Creatures, dubbed as the ‘new Twilight.’ Like the hit series starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, the film by Richard LaGravanese is based on a book about a “boy-meets-witch fantasy set in the South.”

The film has given Alice Englert a breakthrough performance and the same instant fame that had propelled Kristen Stewart to stardom. Beautiful Creatures is one film that Alice Englert has admittedly turned down not just once but three times before finally giving in to take a shot at big-league acting.

Alice revealed in an interview with The Independent-U.K why it took her some time to accept the project. A three-sentence brief note on the script she said, had added insult to injury, affirming her earlier decision not to even consider the project.

She said: “I said 'no' three times just because I hadn't read the script and I got a three-sentence brief that described it as being a Twilight re-make. I'd done nothing and I didn't want to audition for something I wasn't going to get anyway because it was a big studio thing. And then they asked again and I said 'no', and then they asked a third time and I thought that was funny but again said 'no'.

She noted in the same interview that she was compelled to sit down with the film officials after incessant communications from them.

“But then I got an email from the producer asking me to please come in, so I went in, and I was precocious and out of my place and told Richard how I thought he should make his film, and so after I finally got around to reading the script and loved it, I said to myself: 'Oh my god. I'm such an idiot. I'm not going to get it now.' And then I did one audition and I did.”

Aware of what to expect from the film and having grown up in a family from the film business, Alice admitted that she was a bit more careful than she ought to. The Independent UK noted that her “pickiness” can be attributed to having around people in the industry and learning about the intricacies in films at such a young age. The 18-year-old Aussie actress is the daughter of Oscar winning director, Jane Campion. Her father, Colin Englert is also a director and with both her parents from the industry, Alice has had early education in the business.

“Apparently I had lunch with Johnny Depp when I was three months old,” she says. “I spent time at schools in New York, London, New Zealand, Rome and Australia, a lot of quick moving around while I followed my mum, who was always on film sets. I went to Sibford boarding school in Oxfordshire for a while too. Apparently it's for dyslexic people although I don't think I'm actually dyslexic. Maybe I'm in denial?” Alice said, according to The Independent UK.

Beautiful Creatures is a film adaptation featuring great actors and actresses, including Emma Thompson, Viola Davis and multi-awarded British actor, Jeremy Irons. In the film, Alice plays bookish newcomer in high school. She said her role in the film is not too different from her own experience as she was growing up.

“I deliberately went to boarding school. It was my choice. My mum was abroad and I wanted to wean myself off being dependent. It was a very important time for me to be able to create my own individual, independent life; just as a way of growing up,” she says. She ultimately dropped out before finishing school,” Alice said.

She added, “For a lot of my own school time, I felt so disconnected and what really sustained me throughout was writing music and poetry and reading books,” she says, citing her favourites as Chekhov, William Blake and Dostoevsky. Nor was she the most popular girl in class.”

The Aussie star who has been compared to Kristen Stewart since she starred in Beautiful Creatures gushed over her co-stars, particularly Jeremy Irons.

“I've loved Jeremy and had an inappropriate crush on him since I was a little girl when I saw him in The Mission when I was 10. And working with Emma Thompson was marvellous too. She has a phenomenal career and does everything I would want to do,” said Alice.

Unlike Kristen who is based in Los Angeles with boyfriend, Robert Pattinson, Alice is planning on setting up a home in London.

Beautiful Creatures is set to be released in DVDs in May. This marks Alice’s first majore feature film. She had however, appeared in short films in mid-2000 but her role in Beautiful Creatures has given her an instant fame the same way Kristen Stewart has become a household name for her role as Bella Swan in Twilight series.
