Leeza Ormsby, a New Zealander who was accused of drug offence, was finally released from a Bali prison on Wednesday after she spent nine months in jail. Though a resident of Sydney, she was deported to New Zealand, which is her country of origin. Ormsby's arrest and imprisonment had evoked much surprise and the incident itself had a fair share of twists.

Ormsby finally left the jail with a message from the jail governor - "Don't ever come back here." Ormsby promised she would never return to inmate status and thanked the jail boss and said she was happy" to be out, reported AU News.

Bitter Holiday

The 38-year-old was arrested for possessing marijuana while holidaying in Bali, early this year. She had bought the joint from a man on the beach for a "pleasure". Ormsby's case was that of a New Zealander on a holiday, but the vaction turning sour. While unwinding in the island, to destress the bustle of Sydney's city life, she finally landed in Bali jail for nine months, reported 3News. Leeza Ormsby, had left her Sydney flat, after leaving a note that she would be back in seven days. But to her misfortune, she stumbled on the scene of a Bali drug raid, and a half-smoked joint was also seized from her handbag. The police had seized some MDMA and hashish also from the villa. All evidence went against her, until the police got wind of a tip off about an earlier "drugs party".

Sydney musician Azaria Byrne came forward to claim that he booked the villa but he had already returned to Australia, when the raid took place. Marco Mazzucco, Sydney DJ and Ormsby's ex-lover, was questioned by police, but he was let off.

Escaped Serious Punishment

The crime would have earned her 12 years jail, but contrition and no consistent history of drug use saved her from limiting the sentence to 10 months. In jail the Kiwi's sentence was cut short from 10 months to 9 months, following her good behavior. Sudjonggo, the governor of Kerobokan, told media that he had reports about her good behaviour, including religious instruction when she was behind the bars. Ormsby also stayed stoic throughout her trial and showed respect to the court. During the trial, she told the judges that she broke the law of Indonesia and assured that in future, she will be wiser from the experience.
