Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is clearly disappointed with the “megalomaniac” remark made by former Environment Minister Peter Garrett about him on Channel 7’s Sunday Night program. In the 25-minutes long interview, Garrett said Rudd jeopardised the safety of Australia.

The interview came at a 'perfect timing' given the release of Garret’s book “Big Blue Sky,” which is out on Wednesday. Channel 7’s interviewer Melissa Doyle read a passage from the book, where Garett wrote that the safety of Australia was threatened while Rudd was prime minister. Garrett said he would stand by his claims.

When he was asked what danger he thinks the then-prime minister could have pose to the country, Garett said Rudd was unpredictable.

A spokesperson for Rudd has dismissed the claims, saying that if Garrett was actually serious about the allegations he made in his book, he would have opened up about it five years ago and not dig into history now.

"Peter Garrett is trying to sell a book. I have no idea what else he's doing these days," the spokeswoman told Fairfax Media on Monday. "If Mr Garrett were serious about these accusations he would have made them five years ago. Not try to rewrite history now," she added.

During Rudd’s prime ministership, Garrett was not a part of the cabinet’s National Security Committee, which oversaw the security policies of the country. As a result Garrett was not privy to the decisions made by the cabinet on security issues.

In another part of the book, Garrett also wrote he considered supporting Rudd as the biggest mistake of his political career.
