Being an official member of the royal family means you get to have a portrait of your own, and Kate Middleton's time to be rendered on canvass has come. Many reacted on artist, Paul Emsley's official portrait of the Duchess of Cambridge, saying it doesn't transcend Kate's youthful and stunning looks.

And followers (and amateur photoshop artists) took their thoughts though memes, by creating images that mock Emsley's painting. Some feature the Duchess with Joker's face, some with Catherine's face bulging and aged.

Although this is the case, Emsley still thinks that the words spewed by critics about his Kate masterpiece hurt him more than the meme photos.

"Some of the words written about it were so personal. I'd be inhuman if I said it didn't affect me," said Emsley to the British Daily.

"When you take on commissions like this, it is hazardous and you expect a bit of flak, but I expected nothing like the criticism I have received. I didn't expect it to go to the levels it did." added the award-winning artist.

The painting is currently on display at UK's National Portrait Gallery, and Emsley invites everyone to take a look at his work up close because it has a different effect than just seeing the painting on photograph.

The artist also talked about how charming Catherine was when she modeled for the painting.

"She struck me as enormously open and generous and a very warm person. After initially feeling it was going to be an unsmiling portrait, I think it was the right choice in the end to have her smiling-that is really who she is." tells Emsley in a report posted by E! Online.
