“Jessica Jones” is getting ready for its second season. All 13 episodes will reportedly be helmed by female directors, according to showrunner and executive producer Melissa Rosenberg.

Variety reports that Rosenberg was at her “Transforming Hollywood 7: Diversifying Entertainment” panel at University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. The conference was held on Oct. 21, 2016, where the showrunner talked about the all-female director roster of the upcoming “Jessica Jones” Season 2. The names of the women in the exclusive team have yet to be announced.

According to Rosenberg, she aimed to increase the number of female directors for “Jessica Jones” Season 2. Marvel was very supportive of her decision, so they prioritized to hire women first, before getting male directors for pre-production. Shortly afterwards, someone suggested that they only book women for the director roster, an idea that they loved. Rosenberg did not share plot details, however, but only mentioned that the scripts were drawing closer to completion and shooting was scheduled to begin in 2017.

When interviewing potential writers for the show, Rosenberg is reportedly less interested in their professional experience. She would rather know where they are from, their life experiences, their history and what they are offering on a personal level. The approach apparently works, giving “Jessica Jones” Season 1 a unique perspective compared to others in the same genre, and warranting a second season. The storyline was darker and grittier, dealing with female issues along the way, and garnering the praise of viewers everywhere.

Marvel has actively been promoting diversity across all media in the past few years. Krysten Ritter will reprise her role as the titular character and will continue to struggle with post-sexual assault trauma. Jessica Jones will also be dealing with the final events of the past season, including killing someone. More about Jessica and Trish Walker’s (Rachael Taylor) relationship are expected to be shown in the new season.

“Jessica Jones” Season 1 is currently available on Netflix. The official launch date of the second season is expected to be unveiled soon. More updates and details are expected in the following weeks.
