San Francisco 49ers rookie Jarryd Hayne could be back in action against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9 of the 2015-2016 NFL regular season following the series of injuries that hit the club.

Hayne got back with the 49ers after being waived by the team prior to their 27-6 defeat from the St Louis Rams on Monday. But the Australian rookie faces another challenge of making it into San Francisco’s active roster, getting demoted to the club’s practice squad after clearing the NFL’s waivers system.

Hayne’s recent setback has struck disappointment to Australian fans, and speculations about the 27-year-old rookie heading back to Australia to play for NRL has surfaced. However, “Hayne Plane” is still set for another flight in the 49ers’ active roster after special teams coach Thomas McGaughey hinted Hayne could have another chance to wear the team’s No. 38 jersey.

“That’s always an option,” McGaugey said when asked about recalling Hayne as an option in the event Bruce Ellington gets hurt. “Whenever you’ve got a guy on your roster, you have a plethora of options you have, but he’s definitely an option.”

According to San Jose Mercury News’ Cam Inman, San Francisco has been needing reinforcements at the punt return position despite Bradley Pinion’s recovery from a calf strain, which forced him to exit Monday’s game after his ninth punt. Ellington will then go back to his role as the return specialist for Jim Tomsula, replacing Reggie Bush, who had a season-ending injury suffered against the Rams.

As bad as it sounds, Hayne’s shot at redemption is for main roster players to be sidelined by injuries. The 49ers chance for a playoff spot is also very slim to none, which makes the timing right for Hayne to get more opportunities despite his NFL woes in his rookie season.

Meanwhile, Hayne has received the sympathy of the US media following the 49ers’ move to axe the Australian rugby league star. Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle said Hayne has been giving the 49ers a game-breaking element despite his demotion to the team’s 10-man practice lineup.

“I would bet that the move to cut Hayne caused St. Louis head coach Jeff Fisher to breathe a sigh of relief Saturday,” Ostler wrote. “Hayne very well might be the clueless fumble machine the 49ers seem to believe him to be, but at least he strikes a hint of fear in opponents.”
