After the enormous success of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” fans are now excited for the movie’s sequel expected to be released in the year 2017. Director/writer James Gunn has teased the plot of the future adventures and mission of the Marvel superhero.

Fans can expect to see major deviations in the storyline of the movie from the plot line of the comic book. According to James Gunn, “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” will not entirely be based on the comic stories. James Gunn appeared on the Alison Rosen is Your New Best Friend podcast (via Uproxx). The director revealed what one can expect from “Guardians of the Galaxy 2.”

The part 2 of the Marvel franchise will be an “original story” that was planned by the director even before part 1 was released, James Gunn was quoted as saying. The 2014 movie ended with some major cliffhangers and mystery about Star Lord’s father. As per the director, “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” will provide the answer to those questions and revealing who Peter Quill’s father is and “what’s going on with that.”

James Gunn revealed that the story of the next movie will allow fans to learn more about some of the original characters and meet the new ones. These new characters are reportedly going be “very important to ‘Guardians’ movies and probably important to the Marvel universe as a whole.” Based on details revealed by James Gunn, Screen Rant speculates that the “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” will introduce “potential new team members, new villains and supporting characters for future sequels” leading up to possible crossover with "The Avengers" in 2018 and 2019.

For a long time, fans and media outlets have been wondering who Peter Quill’s father is. There are several theories swirling around based on comic book stories. However, the director stated that Star Lord’s father will be someone “different” than what’s given in the comic books.

“So then when the movie came out, we got green-lit on the sequel right away. I went in and I sat down with those guys and I’m like, ‘Okay, here’s what I think the sequel should be.’ And they were like, ‘Oh, whoa. That’s risky, but okay.’ Now I’m going to turn over the story in a few short weeks and we’ll find out how well it works,” the director continued.

“Guardians of the Galaxy 2” will see the return of original cast members, including Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldana and Bradley Cooper. The film is scheduled to be released on May 5, 2017.
