Italian woman commits suicide after sex videos become viral
In December 2015, after Miss Universe host Steve Harvey made a gaffe and admitted he named Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez as winner by mistake instead of Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach, the dethroned beauty queen was shamed twice after she received an offer to do a sex movie from Vivid Entertainment. Just getting an offer was considered a mental torture for Gutierrez, while for an Italian woman, her sex video becoming viral was so humiliating she committed suicide.
Women’s Weekly reports that 31-year-old Tiziana Cantone’s woes started in 2015 when she sent six different sex videos of herself to her former boyfriend and friends. The videos showed her performing oral sex on another man as a form of revenge porn on her ex.
However, the videos were leaked on porn sites and social media on the internet and became viral after popular Italian footballers Antonio Floro Flores and Paolo Cannavaro mocked Cantone. Soon, she became fodder for gossip sites and her name was searched. There were rumours she has become a porn actress.
Cantone tried to have the videos removed from the internet, but the x-rated clip kept on reemerging. To spare her the mental torture and shame caused by explicit viral memes that sprouted, Cantone started the process of legally changing her name.
She had two previous suicide attempts and eventually succeeded while staying at the house of her mother, Maria Teresa Cantone, reports La Repubblica. Her mother describes Cantone as a healthy, normal girl until the sex videos were leaked and caused her to be distraught.
“She has spoken of her desire to leave everything behind, and to close with the past,” says Maria Teresa. She adds, “I wonder how anyone can be so fierce, how to rage against a girl who has not done anything wrong … I think that they should be ashamed of all those who have filled the web of insults and meanwhile secretly watched the images.”
Francesco Greco, public prosecutor, started an investigation on Cantone’s death, reports The Independent. Because of Cantone’s suicide, Italian MP Donata Lenzi, head of the Democratic Party group in the Social Affairs Commission, proposed legislation punishing cyberbullying and the sharing of revenge porn.
