Samsung is already working with Apple to provide OLED displays for Apple Watch and iPad units. According to a recent report from Korea, Samsung might be supplying display panels based on organic light emitting diodes (OLED) for the 2018 iPhone lineup running on iOS.

A report in The Korea Times states Apple might collaborate with Samsung Display to build OLED panels for its flagship lineup in 2018. The report mentioned that Samsung Display, which has been making display screens for its own Galaxy handsets, will supply iPhone display panels in 2018.

Noted industry experts believe this would be a major move on the part of the Korean smartphone manufacturer that will intensify its competition against LG Display. Experts also opined that because they have several advantages over LCDs like lower manufacturing costs; OLEDs will lead the display industry towards a leap for further growth.

Back in June, another report in Business Korea also revealed the Cupertino tech giant is “serious” about using OLED panels for iPhones in the near future. Earlier, reliable KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned in a research note that Apple might continue with the LCD display panels and refrain from using OLED panels till 2018. For many years, the Cupertino giant relied on LCD IPS displays.

Kuo, who has an excellent track record for predicating Apple’s upcoming moves, also mentioned that Foxconn is eyeing on developing its US$4 billion LTPS TFT-LCD plant in China for making iPhone screens. The backlit LCD displays are known for reducing battery life. They have a longer product life, however. Currently, LG Display is the major supplier of iPhone panels.
