IFA, the world's largest consumer electronics and home appliances show, could be host to a device that would topple Apple's iPad.

Apple Inc. has already sold more than 30 million units of the iPad since April last year and it will surely continue to be the number one tablet seller in the next 12 months. After slashing prices of its TouchPad from $499.99 to $99.99, Hewlett Packard will likely emerge as the number two seller of media tablets this year.

But the extravaganza that is attracting more than 200,000 visitors could redefine the tablet landscape in the future. Although the iPad has cornered more than 70% of tablet sales, it doesn't assure that the tablet running on Apple's proprietary iOS platform will have a perpetual stint at number one. Just ask Nokia Oyj, which for more than a decade was the king of the mobile phone market but is now beaten black and blue by Apple (iPhone) and Samsung Electronics (Galaxy S 2 and others). And HP's runner-up standing in the tablet market is only temporary, as it'd unlikely continue giving up tablets at $99 when the selling price is three times the costs to manufacture.

At the IFA 2011 in Berlin, Germany, device makers from all over the world - China's Lenovo, Taiwan's Acer, Korea's Samsung, and Japan's Toshiba and Sony, among others - have unveiled devices that each aims to be the iPad killer.
