"My health's wildly important to me. I wouldn't have the stamina and energy for 80-hour work weeks without good health," the 34-year-old heartthrob actor shared to the Web site. Mr Somerhalder further discussed at WebMD about what he does to stay fit, his vampire character Damon Salvatore in the "Vampire Diaries" TV series and his dedication to the IS Foundation that focuses on issues concerning green energy, the environment and animal rights.

Ian Somerhalder follows a particular healthy diet that includes fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains like quinoa. In order to keep his physically fit and muscular build, Ian admitted he likes to speed walk, practice yoga and play basketball.

"If you're stressed out and wound up, go for a 1-, 2-, or 3-mile run and see what happens. Push your body, and your body will produce the chemicals that make you feel better," Ian recommends. He added that focus and positivity are important when it comes to improving one's health.

The actor stated: "You've got to be really committed to it. You've got to plan for it. And you've got to make it a habit. You're going to get a lot more out of your brain and your body if you take care of both. Keep it full of really positive stuff and that's what you manifest in your life. I know it sounds clichéd, but it's true, man, and I'm glad I learned that."

In the upcoming "Vampire Diaries" Season 5, Ian Somerhalder looks forward to being evil again with his vampire character Damon Salvatore. "In season one, Damon was extremely dangerous, volatile, and unpredictable. I hope to bring that Damon back," Ian declared.

Mr Somerhalder may be portraying a villainous character on-screen but he really is a good guy off-screen. In 2010, Ian Somerhalder officially launched his IS Foundation (Ian Somerhalder Foundation) that shows interest on environmental issues, supports green energy and says no to animal cruelty.

"This was an idea that had been percolating for a while but the true catalyst, what really pulled the trigger, was the BP oil spill," Ian shared.
