Huawei is gradually becoming a global smartphone contender due to its recent flagships that are well-received and raved about. Let’s pit the Chinese tech giants’ two most popular phones against each other and see which one is better battery-wise, the Huawei P9 or the Huawei Mate 9.

The Huawei P9 sports a 3,000 mAh non-removable lithium-ion battery, which is just enough for a day’s worth of use. It doesn’t have either wireless or true fast charging support. The Huawei P9 provides over eight hours of video playback, over nine hours of web browsing and about 15 hours of 3G phone calls.

The Huawei Mate 9, meanwhile, equips a non-removable lithium polymer battery that packs in a much greater cell capacity compared to the Huawei P9 at 4,000 mAh, although it also doesn’t have wireless charging capabilities. The Mate 9 cell, however, comes with the new SuperCharge technology, which can deliver a whole day’s worth of usage in only 20 minutes of charging time. The new power-saving feature also permits the Huawei Mate 9 to extend battery life and provide more than two days of continuous use.

When TechRadar put the Huawei P9 and the Huawei Mate 9 to rigid battery performance tests that included web browsing, gaming, YouTube playback and native video playback, the Huawei Mate 9 came out on top. After an hour and a half of web browsing, the P9 was left with 63 percent battery life while the Mate 9 had 71 percent. Following another hour and a half of YouTube playback, the P9’s battery level further dropped to 24 percent while the Mate 9 carried on with 47 percent.

The Huawei P9 was completely drained after the third test, which was gaming, and finished with a total performance time of three hours and 37 minutes. The Huawei Mate 9, on the other hand, had 7 percent remaining battery life after the gaming test. The Mate 9 went on to last 11 minutes during the fourth and final test, which was native video playback, and finished with a total performance time of four hours and 41 minutes.
