According to ChainFire's post at Google Plus website, it took a few hours to work on the root access on HTC Nexus 9. ChainFire explained that the process has been affected by the first firmware release of Android 5.0 Lollipop and the 64-bit computing configuration on the processor equipped on the Android tablet.

"As such, this includes SuperSU v2.18 which is a special build for the Nexus 9, which you should definitely not try to put on any other device nor should you put an older version of SuperSU on the Nexus 9," clarification of ChainFire for the rooting kit exclusive on HTC Nexus 9 only.
