YouTube can be one of the most educational and entertaining websites on the internet for your children. However, there are also several videos presented that are deemed inappropriate for the little ones. It is best that you learn how to keep YouTube safe and suitable to your kids’ ages. Here are the steps on how to make YouTube safe for child viewing.

1. Create a family account

You can set up a shared Google account that allows you to monitor everything that your child views and uploads. You can also learn about the type of information that your children share. Create a new Gmail account then log in. You can then set up your YouTube channel, together with a shared inbox for family emails and a shared family calendar. Any videos that were viewed using the account will appear in the History button.

2. Activate Safety mode.

YouTube has a Safety mode that will block all objectionable content. The bottom is found at the bottom of the home page. Sign in on YouTube, scroll down then click on the button stating “Lock safety mode on this browser”. Choose “On” from the choices and enter your login details if required.

3. Hide the comments extension.

Many times, you will notice how other users tend to post inappropriate contents at the bottom of videos. Remove YouTube comments extension by using a free app. Your kids will only view the video without having to read any negative comments.

4. Block specific YouTube channels.

You can download and install Video Blocker on Chrome. After installation, find the thumbnail for a video that you wish to block. Right click on the thumbnail then choose “Block Videos From This Channel”. Your children will no longer see any videos from to it.

5. Make playlists.

For young kids, it is recommended that you come up with a playlist of videos that you find appropriate. Children can simply choose from your pre-approved selection. Subscribe to family-friendly channels and add videos to your playlist accordingly.

When your children get older, they will find new ways to get around your safety modes. Follow the steps above to keep your younger ones protected at all times on YouTube.
