"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" features a peek at Beorn's lair as well as showing other behind-the-scenes footage including Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins.

Beorn is a character in the book "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien. He is a shape-shifting giant who can turn into a black bear. He is fond of animals and he keeps several of them in his home, including intelligent dogs and horses. As a man, Beorn is tall with black hair, huge arms and a beard. He is incredibly strong.

The character of Beorn will be played by Swedish actor Mikael Åke Persbrandt. He will appear in both The "Desolation of Smaug" and "There and Back Again" films. Persbrandt has mostly appeared in Swedish films and TV series such as "Mig äger ingen," "Någon annanstans i Sverige" and "Die Patin - Kein Weg zurück."

The main difference between Beorn in the book and in the films is his hair color and style. In the films, he has greyish-brown hair, instead of black as described in the book. It's also styled like a Mohawk and his beard is forked.

In the video above, William Kircher, who plays the dwarf Bifur, Jed Brophy, who plays the dwarf Nori, Graham McTavish, who plays the dwarf Dwalin, Persbrandt, McKellen and director, writer and producer Peter Jackson all comment on Beorn and his house.

"He is what we call in this movie, a skin changer," said Persbrandt in the Warner Bros. exclusive content video of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug."

"The set was big, which made us look smaller," said McKellen in the Warner Bros. video.

Peter Jackson said that the set they used for Beorn's house was huge.

The video also shows outtakes of the film including the dwarves hanging out and having fun tinkering in the huge set used as Beorn's house. Freeman as Bilbo is seen sitting on a chair and pretending to drink from a gigantic mug as his fellow cast mates laugh and look on.

Beorn will be an important character in the films because he will help Bilbo and his companions in their quest as they go to the Lonely Mountain.

Peter Jackson also released a new video (The Hobbit - Official Production Video #12) with behind-the-scenes clips featuring Lake Town and some fight scenes involving spiders.
