Halloween 2013 costume? Check. Halloween goodies? Check. Halloween décor? Check. Now all you need is an honest-to-goodness horror movie that doesn't fall under the PG-13 slasher category.

Good horror movies are few and far between but the good ones rarely make it to the mainstream. Here is a list of five classic horror films you may have missed.

1. Phenomena

Jennifer Connelly plays the character of Jennifer Corvino, a teenage girl being forced to go to a boarding school for girls where the girls are being murdered one by one. Donald Pleasence who plays John McGregor, an entomologist teams up with the young girl Jennifer to find the killer. Corvino has the ability to control insects and communicate with them telepathically so McGregor uses her powers to finally pin down the murderer. And the murderer? You will be surprised who it is and most likely will be pleased.

2. In the Mouth of Madness

This horror film owes a lot to H.P. Lovecraft. The movie tackles the disappearance of a well-known horror novelist named Sutter Cane. A man hired to find Cane and his manuscript stumbles into Hobb's End, an imaginary place that Cane has created in his writing. The private investigator realises he is encountering people and places and nightmares right out of Cane's books.

3. Peeping Tom

Psycho overshadowed this other 1960s serial killer film but it doesn't mean it's bad. The story revolves around a voyeur who slaughters the women he is attracted to. The voyeur was subjected to psychological tests when he was a child and this was done to him by his own father. He likes seeing fear in the eyes of the women he kills. According to Martin Scorcese, Peeping Tom has all the tricks of the trade -everything that a good director needs.

4. Psycho II

Psycho II is usually described as one of the forgotten sequels of a good horror movie. The story is set 22 years after Psycho where Norman Bates finally gets out of a mental institution because he now appears mentally sound. Psycho II may probably be one of the best movies you will watch this Halloween especially if you want to be shocked to the extreme. Basically, no one should mess with Norman Bates, he is the king of slasher horror after all.

5. From Beyond

"From Beyond" is another H.P. Lovecraft story directed by Stuart Gordon. The story is about two men who built a machine they call The Resonator inside their country mansion. When turned on, the machine stimulates a certain part of the brain of the people within its electromagnetic field making it possible for these people to see another dimension. The other dimension overlaps with the dimension they are originally from but while this is awesome, those who are in the other dimension are affected by it as well. This turns into a gruesome tale and the beings who have been disturbed don't like humans.
