Rockstar Games' open-world shooter franchise "Grand Theft Auto" has seen 15 entries (including DLC packs), and to date, its series sales stands at nearly 200 million units. "GTA" is undoubtedly a massive cultural phenomenon. Each entry sells more units than the previous installment, and the newest game in the series, "GTA V," is no exception. The game was originally released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in Sept. 2013, while the PS4 and Xbox One versions arrived in November last year.

To ensure gamers would have a reason to revisit the open world of Los Santos in "GTA V," Rockstar Games made numerous updates to the PS4 and Xbox One versions. Enhanced performance and lighting, new weather effects, new weapons, cars and songs were all added. However, the biggest new feature was the addition of an entirely new first person mode. This mode gives gamers a new way to play "GTA," and no doubt contributed heavily to the game shipping a total of 10 million units, as reported by Gamespot.

The number was divulged as part of the company's earnings report for the last quarter of last year. In a released statement picked up by MarketWatch, Take-Two CEO, Strauss Zelnick pledged that the company would continue to innovate and provide titles that set the bar against which all others are judged.

"Anchored by the eagerly-anticipated launches of 'Evolve' and 'Grand Theft Auto V' for PC, along with an array of other offerings, we will continue to deliver titles that captivate audiences around the world and set benchmarks for excellence," he said in the statement.

GamesIndustry.biz reported in May last year that "GTA V" had shipped 33 million copies. This latest report indicates the game has shipped 12 million copies to retailers in eight months. That figure becomes even more impressive considering the fact that Take Two and Rockstar have yet to release "GTA V" on PC, which is set for release on Mar. 24.

Gamers continue to wait patiently for Rockstar to announce a release date for the free "Online Heists DLC" add-on for the game. A trailer was released in Dec. 2014, but no concrete date has been given.
