The San Antonio Spurs (57-16) will host the Golden State Warriors (60-14) in a battle between the top two teams of the Western Conference on Wednesday. With eight games remaining in the season, the Warriors, still two-and-a-half games ahead of the Spurs, are likely to hold onto the No. 1 seed.

Though the Warriors are on an eight-game winning streak, they've dropped both previous contests to the San Antonio Spurs (Oct. 25 and Mar. 11) and would be under immense pressure to avoid a regular season sweep in Wednesday's nationally-televised game. Most analysts expect the Warriors to overcome the Spurs in a potential playoff series but the Spurs would attain psychological edge with a 3-0 season sweep of Steve Kerr's team.

During their previous encounter in San Antonio, the Spurs ran away with a 107-85 victory against a Warriors team sans Draymond Green, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant. The Spurs, too, sat out stars Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge. The Warriors will continue to play without Durant, who is nearing a comeback and could return to the court for the final few games of the regular season.

Warriors vs Spurs: Could team face again in playoffs?

The Spurs are fresh off a dominating 103-74 victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the reigning NBA champions, but coach Gregg Popovich realises that the team has little time to make adjustments ahead of next month's playoffs. "We had a really good night defensively -- everything came from that. We just play the games and in every one there's some good and some there's some bad. We'll watch the film and go over what we think we could have done better. At this point of the season, you are what you are," said Popovich, via ESPN.

According to Warriors All-Star Klay Thompson, the team is playing with a chip on their shoulder since losing superstar forward Kevin Durant to a knee injury. "We've really responded well to playing without KD. Obviously, it's a challenge, but we're going to be that much better when he comes back," said Thompson, who is averaging 22.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists in his sixth NBA season.

After visiting the Spurs, the Warriors will return home to host the Houston Rockets (Friday), the Washington Wizards (Sunday) and the Minnesota Timberwolves (Tuesday) before setting off on a road trip. The team is expected to provide a Kevin Durant injury update within the coming few days.
