The last episode of TV musical hit "Glee" left many of its fans crying and bewildered on what will happen next to the most loved characters.

The season 3 final episode showed Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn (Cory Monteith) breaking up right after graduation. This surprise surely made a tear-jerking farewell for fans. Finn drove Rachel to the train station to New York instead of their wedding, saying that she should follow her dreams. Finn also revealed his intention of getting enlisted to the army to "redeem his father's honour."

The finale showed the graduation of the seniors; Rachel, Finn, Kurt (Chris Colfer), Quinn (Dianna Agron), Mike (Harry Shum Jr.), Puck (Mark Salling), Mercedes (Amber Riley) and Santana (Naya Rivera) who wore their red caps and gowns.

Despite the tearful goodbyes, Rachel headed for greener pastures as she was accepted to Julliard, a perforing arts school in New York. She ended up boarding the train alone towards New York since her best friend, Kurt, did not make the cut and Finn got rejected on an acting school.

Other characters also moved on in their lives. Santana planned to move to New York using money she had saved for college. Dancer Mike Chang was headed to Chicago and Mercedes going to Los Angeles to try a singing career. However, Brittany's (Heather Morris) did not graduate due to her poor grades.

Season 4 Details

With all of the characters heading towards different directions, it is unclear if they will be back on the next season or if audiences will be seeing new characters to join some of the remaining casts.

Fox said before that the next season will show McKinley High in Ohio and New York City, where some of the characters headed. Glee creator Ryan Murphy said that all of the stars will return to the show in some way.

When it returns in the autumn, the programme will feature a 'show within a show following some of the characters to New York,' Fox executive Kevin Reilly told reporters last week.

'A couple of fresh faces in Ohio' will join the castmates still in high school,' he added.

Returning students include Artie (Kevin McHale), Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) and Blaine (Darren Criss). It is rumored that actresses Kate Hudson and Sarah Jessica Parker will appear as guest stars on some episodes.

"Glee" has been a television sensation in 2010 with its music and humor. The program is one of Fox's top shows, although there has been a downfall when it comes to the ratings this year. The show has total viewer ratings of 6.6 million this year compared to the 8.4 million last year.

Fans will have to wait for a new timeslot next season as Glee will move to Thursday nights in the autumn on Fox.
