The new “Ghostbusters” reboot will feature an all-female cast including Melissa McCarthy. Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones are reportedly in negotiations with Sony to join McCarthy in the said film. The “Ghostbusters” reboot will be directed by Paul Feig and it will be released on July 22, 2016. Read on to learn more about it.

The Hollywood Reporter, or THR, reports McCarthy has officially signed on as one of the lead stars of the “Ghostbusters” reboot. As for Wiig, Jones and McKinnon, negotiations are still ongoing, but they are expected to sign on for the project. No word yet on the names of the characters they will portray in the film.

Feig posted photos of McCarthy, Wiig, McKinnon and Jones on his official Twitter account on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015. He also confirmed the release date of “Ghostbusters.”

“In other news, #Ghostbusters will be hitting theaters July 22, 2016. Save the date!” Feig tweeted.

Feig, McCarthy and Wiig have previously worked together in the 2011 film “Bridesmaids.” As for McKinnon and Jones, they are both on “Saturday Night Live,” or “SNL.”

Feig wasn’t the first choice to direct the “Ghostbusters” reboot. He replaced Ivan Reitman, who directed the original “Ghostbusters” in 1984. Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Harold Ramis were supposed to reprise their roles as Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddemore. Bill Murray who played Dr. Peter Venkman in the film was elusive about joining Aykroyd, Hudson and Ramis.

But plans for the remake of the film featuring the original director and cast fell through. Ramis passed away on Feb. 24, 2014 and Reitman decided to step down as the “Ghostbusters” director.

Aykroyd, who co-wrote “Ghostbusters” in 1984 with the late Ramis, has expressed enthusiasm over the reboot featuring an all-female cast led by McCarthy. He issued a statement to THR about it.

"The Aykroyd family is delighted by this inheritance of the Ghostbusters torch by these most magnificent women in comedy," Dan’s statement read in THR.
