An X Factor Australia contestant has not only impressed judges Ronan Keating, Redfoo, and Dannii Minogue, but also brought tears to the eyes of the viewers Tuesday night. Ofisa Toleafoa, or simply Tee, came to the country from New Zealand after his mother turned her back on him when she found out he was gay.

Tee was the last contestant to audition for the singing program. He explained to the judges that he has come to Australia so he can be “who I want to be cause I’m gay.”

“Today I’m singing for my mum. I just want her to know that I am changing but my love for her will never change,” Tee said backstage.

“I hope she sees me and she’s proud of me,” the Kiwi said as he tried to hold back his tears.

Tee sang Jennifer Hudson’s “I Am Changing,” impressing the audience with his soulful rendition and prompting a standing ovation from the three judges (judge Natalie Bassingthwaighte was not present in the episode).

“Singing that song felt like my mum was right here with me,” he answered when Ronan asked how did the song make him feel.

“One of my bandmates had the same situation as you. And it was heartbreaking,” Ronan said, most probably referring to Stephen Gately, his fellow Boyzone singer who died in 2009. Stephen came out as gay 10 years prior to his death.

“But you know what, time is a healer. It’s incredible. And just give it time. You’re gonna get through this. And your family will come back because they’ll see the beautiful person that you are. And man have you got a voice! What a voice, Tee!”

Dannii agreed, saying, “That was one of my favourite auditions ever. You have such a voice and you are singing for so many people now it’s incredible.”

“I’ve got to see more,” Redfoo added.

Tee will be joining the other contestants who successfully auditioned on the Seven Network talent show in boot camp before the contest proper.
