Neil deGrasse Tyson, a well-known astrophysicist, took to Twitter recently to share his thoughts on the dragons in the “Game of Thrones” TV series. His insight reveals how Viserion may emerge more powerful than his brothers when they clash in season 8. The following article contains spoilers from the episodes that have already aired.

According to Tyson’s comments (see below), the physics of Viserion's blue flame suggests that it should be three times hotter than that of his brothers. Since this is a TV show, the producers may not be accurate when it comes to the physics. The story is has magic and magical creatures, so the writers have the choice of ignoring real-world dynamics of certain elements they build.

It should, however, be noted that the producers do consider the actual physics of the real world while creating elements such as the flame of Viserion. In a previous interview with Vanity Fair, sound designer Paula Fairfield explained that the way the new Viserion works is that his “flame” is actually cold, but it’s so cold (like liquid nitrogen) that it burns.

Since Viserion is dead, he can’t breathe fire. He, like the other ice dragons in fantasy books and movies, breaths ice. But the intensity of the coldness of Viserion’s breath was so much, it was able to cut through the Wall like a hot knife over butter.

Tyson’s assessment of the power of the blue flame, if used by the producers, will make the clash of the dragons in the next season interesting to watch. The Night’s King only has one of these magical creatures under his command, while Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) has two. However, if the blue flame is three times more powerful than the red flame, it evens the odds for the Army of the dead.
