Brienne of Tarth, has been given a unique backstory by her creator George R.R. Martin. The author explains her lineage and romantic mishaps.

The author of “A Song of Ice and Fire,” the book from where the “Game of Thrones” TV series is based, made a public appearance in Balticon, Baltimore. Martin was seen before the crowd and reading a new chapter from “The Winds of Winter,” which he has not done for years. The pieces that he read contained an interesting revelation about Brienne. The lady warrior from Tarth apparently has a flattering backstory, Vanity Fair shares.

There has been little information on Brienne’s origins both in the books and the TV show. Both versions are distressing. It is said that she lost her siblings and her mother. Even though her father wanted to marry her off, she still remains single. The lady has also suffered three broken engagements. Lady Brienne was often scorned, mocked and rejected.

However, in an instant, George R.R. Martin was able to give the Lady of Tarth’s non-dainty frame a remarkable new meaning. Martin discussed to the Baltic crowd that Lady Brienne of Tarth is the descendant of Ser Duncan the Tall.

In Season 4, a short clip about Ser Duncan, one of the most famous knights in Westeros, was shown. In a scene where Joffrey was flipping through a book about the Kingsguard history, he comments “Four pages for Ser Duncan. He must have been quite a man.” “So they say,” Jaime Lannister answered.

Although the TV series did not discuss much about Ser Duncan, he is one of Martin’s favourites. Unknown to many, he has written a series of novels about Ser Duncan and his squire “Egg.” It has been turned into a graphic novel, as well, released by Marvel.

As a parallel, Martin used the phrase “thick as a castle wall” to describe both Ser Duncan and Lady Brienne. The knight was also popular for his chivalry, height and fighting skills. The same goes with his female descendant.

Martin further said that if HBO would make a spin-off from “Game of Thrones” he would like it to be about Ser Duncan’s story, the Express reports. He also suggested that each novella could be presented as a two hour stand-alone movie for the network.
