Daenerys showed the “Targaryen ruthlessness” that runs in her blood in “Game of Thrones” Season 6, according to the executive producers of the show. A storyboard of the scene involving dragons has also been released online, showing fans how the producers had planned it on paper before filming.

[Spoiler alert]

“I think Danny has been becoming a Targaryen ever since the end of Season 1,” Executive Producer David Benioff said in a video released online. “She’s not her father and she’s not insane and she’s not a sadist, but there’s a Targaryen ruthlessness that comes with even the good Targaryen,” Executive Producer D.B. Weiss said in the video.

When Daenerys returned to Meereen she found the city under siege. Weiss said that that was exactly what she would have expected would happen in her absence. He said that you feel for Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) because she left him in a “terrible situation” and he did an “excellent job” for a long time by making things better in the city.

“The fact that she has a city at all still is due to him [Tyrion],” Weiss said. Dragons were used in a major battle for the first time in “Game of Thrones” Season 6, soon after Daenerys arrived. The battle was won and Meereen was saved.

Daenerys had initially planned to burn everything and everyone of her enemies, showing a hint of her Targaryen heritage. However Tyrion prevailed upon her to consider an alternative approach. She decided to mount her dragon and defeat the invading army, but allowed one of them to live. The man whose life was spared was allowed to return to his people, so that he may explain what he saw. A storyboard of this scene has been posted on Making Game of Thrones.

Benioff teased that the lords of Westeros who are considering potential opponents in the wars to come will be “pretty nervous” if they find out about what happened in Meereen. The producer described Daenerys’ forces as an “unprecedented threat.” She has a Dothraki horde, The Unsullied, the mercenary army of the Second Sons and three dragons that are “pretty close to full grown.”

After getting control of Meereen, it is unclear if Daenerys plans to travel west across the Narrow Sea in “Game of Thrones” Season 6. The finale episode will reveal if the next battle the Mother of Dragons will fight will be in Westeros.
