The Samsung's Galaxy Note Edge may have gotten the display right with some praising the design for its uniqueness. Fortunately, it appears Samsung is treading a similar path for its upcoming phones as an official confirms the company's plans to launch flexible display allowing handsets to be folded in half. This raises the question whether such "crazy" technology can give Samsung a one up against Apple.

Samsung Display VP Lee Chang-hoon shared during an investor event in New York: "We plan to provide consumers with a product that has a flexible display by the end of" 2015."

"However, nothing has been decided on the finished product." The official added.

According to the Motley Fool, no designs have been finalized for Samsung's upcoming phones. Regardless, the focus on flexible displays and bendable phones should not come as a surprise. The column even suggested that the Galaxy Note Edge may be the most exciting of its kind yet. The positive reaction towards the device should be a good a sign for Samsung to pursue devices with similar design. Delivering foldable handsets may bring back the game for the company.

Despite being the "largest provider" smartphones in the world, Samsung had better days. Rising Chinese tech giant, Xiaomi, has been challenging the position of the firm pressuring it to put out more innovative devices. Analysts believe that if Samsung can pull it off then both Apple and Xiaomi may struggle to catch up particularly Apple.

How?

Samsung has been an advocate of OLED display technology incorporating it in almost all of its Galaxy devices. According to another report by the Motley Fool, OLED may have its downsides but its one upside is its ability of flex. Apple, on other hand, has been using LCD displays. The transition may be difficult for the Cupertino-based giant giving Samsung a lead.

The next expected major flagship release of Samsung is the Samsung Galaxy S6. Several analysts predicted the announcement to be around January or Feb with actual release in March.
