Manchester United have been linked with a €40 million (AU $61.46 million) bid for Turkish winger Hakan Calhanoglu, who has become one of the leading free kick specialists in Europe in the last few seasons.

German publication Bild has claimed that the Red Devils have been scouting the player extensively for the past few months and are ready to make a move for the midfielder when the winter transfer window opens in January.

Calhanoglu moved from Hamburger SV to Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of €14.5 million (AU $22.27 million) and has since had 18 goals and 14 assists in 63 appearances for the club.

United manager Louis van Gaal has already stated his intention to make more signings in the transfer window, especially in attack.

"I have already said, in the transfer period, I could not buy every player I want and that’s also because of the market. I have said that we need creative, speedy players in attack. You have seen which players I have bought; I like that profile, but we need more. I think that all the players I want do want to come. It is not a question of the players, it is a question of the clubs who are stopping them," van Gaal told the Independent.

Meanwhile, Chelsea stalwart John Terry has been linked with an exit from the Premier League, with Qatari club Al Arabi a potential destination.

Arabi are managed by former Chelsea player Gianfranco Zola and he has admitted that the possibility of a move exists, considering Terry’s contract with Chelsea expires at the end of the season and a big payday likely if he does move to Qatar.

"John Terry is a big player and Al Arabi is interested in big players so we will see what happens. There is a chance because it is one of the places where people want to go. The quality of life is very high here,” Zola is quoted as saying by the Evening Standard.
