Treon Harris, a backup quarterback for the Florida Gators in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) college football in the United States, is accused for allegedly sexually assaulting a female student from the same school. An investigation on the matter got underway on Monday and Harris is suspended indefinitely by the team.

The University of Florida (UF) issued an official statement on Monday stating that the case is now with the university police and that Harris suspension means that Harris is banned from all campus and team activities.

“The University of Florida Police Department is investigating the incident, and UFPD has brought in the Gainesville Police Department to assist with collection and analysis of forensic evidence,” the statement read. “The University of Florida and the University Athletic Association are cooperating fully.”

In the same school statement, UF president Bernie Machen added that the school is “committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for every member of the UF community.”

The unfortunate development comes on the heels of Harris’ second game as a college football player and easily his best in UF uniform. The 5-foot-11 Harris replaced a struggling starting QB Jeff Driskel to lead the Gators past the Tennessee Volunteers, 10-9 last Saturday.

With the Gators trailing the Vols, 9-0 near the end of the third quarter, Harris led the Florida fight back gaining crucial yardage to set-up the winning scores. Harris passed for 17 yards (2-of-4 completions) and rushed for 24 yards (4 carries) in the comeback victory.

Florida improved to a 3-1 win-loss record for the season and 2-1 in the Southeastern Conference Standings-East standings.

Meanwhile, an update from alligator.org, an independent, student-owned newspaper for the University of Florida, stated some of the specifics regarding the alleged sexual assault. According to report of the school-based site, Harris had allegedly forced the female victim into residence hall at the Springs Residential Complex early Sunday when the purported sexual assault happened.

Treon Harris’ representatives has yet to issue a detailed statement regarding the accusations.
