Only few Australians are logging in social media using their mobile phone, despite mainstream popularity of online platforms like Facebook, Google+ and Twitter.

According to Ray Morgan Research, the practice is still in the domain of "early adopters". Only around 2.3 million Australians, aged 14 and above, use their mobile phone for social networking in an average four week period. The figures roughly translate to 12% of the total Australian population, 75% of whom had used some kind of social media in an average four weeks.

Mobile Social Networking to Increase

Currently, 46% of Australians, aged 14 and above, owns a smartphone. Of these smartphone owners, 25% use their mobile phones for social networking. According to Ray Morgan Research, trends suggests an increase in social networking on mobile phones as the penetration of smartphone increases.

“Australians are also using a variety of devices (other than just PCs) to access social media, " said Andrew Braun, Mobile, Internet & Technology Industry Director at Roy Mor gan Research.

"In fact, in an average 4 weeks 25% of Smartphone owners use their phone for social networking."

Braun said it is important that Australian businesses know which social media are being used by their customers, and what they are doing with them.

"Australians are using a variety of other social media platforms like YouTube (56%), Google+ (16%) and LinkedIn (12%)," added Braun.

Facebook Still The Most Popular

Facebook remains the most popular social network among Australians, with 67% share of visitors or 12.5 visitors from Austrlia in an average four weeks. This means that 7 out of 10 Australians use Facebook.

But Mark Zuckerberg's Web site may had reached its peak. It has shown little growth in the past 18 months.

On the other hand, Google+ had a 47% increase in the last nine months, garnering 2.9 million visitors in an average four weeks. Twitter, in the last two years, had doubled its visitors from Down Under, receiving 11% of the traffic.
