The hashtag #facebookdown quickly topped Twitter’s trending topics worldwide on Tuesday, as Facebook users temporarily lost access to the social networking site. Facebook returned shortly after news of its service interruption became a trending topic. Some mobile apps linked to Facebook, particularly Tinder and Instagram, also faced a downtime.

The reason for the service interruption is unknown. (Facebook has yet to respond to International Business Times Australia.) During the interruption, users who tried to access the social network saw this message where the site was supposed to load:

“Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can.”

The tweets (Twitter updates) on the topic #facebookdown are mostly meant to be jokes, with users linking up the incident to zero Candy Crush invitations, productivity rising, no and birthday greetings to Facebook users they barely know.

“Take a selfie, remember where you were when #facebookdown happened. Remember it for your grandchildren,” tweets @OGOrlandoJones.

“Instagram has also been knocked offline. The world turns to Twitter. #facebookdown,” tweets @RealTalkBes.

Facebook’s own Twitter account, meanwhile, has no update on the matter. The account’s last tweet was posted on Jan. 21.

Shortly after Facebook was up again, FOX 4 News (@FOX4) was among the first to tweet the update:

“Facebook appears to be back up and running... at least in our Dallas newsroom. #Facebookdown.”

Instagram, which was reportedly affected by the Facebook service outage, released a tweet saying, “We’re aware of an outage affecting Instagram and are working on a fix. Thank you for your patience.” TechCrunch.com and @FOX4 reported the tweet, which drew thousands of retweets. This update no longers appear in Instagram’s Twitter page.

As of press time, Facebook has yet to release a statement on the service interruption.

“@facebook has returned. My preciousssss....#facebookdown,” tweets @WajahatAli.

Facebook is a social networking site with over 50 acquisitions, according to data reported by CrunchBase.com. The company went public on May 18, 2012.
