Social media giant Facebook has tweaked its logo that was originally designed by Joe Kral and Cuban Council in 2005. This is the first time that the company has gone ahead to fine tune its logo and the reason for trimming the iconic logo has largely been attributed to the growing importance and acceptance of smartphones and mobile devices among users, according to reports.

According to Sky News, while the company has retailed the blue background with the word ‘facebook’ appearing in white text, the new font is slightly slimmer and looks sleek. Josh Higgins, Facebook's creative director, said that the company aimed to appear more "friendly and approachable."

A report on Brand New quoted Higgins as saying, “When Facebook’s logo was first created in 2005, the company was just getting started and we wanted the logo to feel grown up and to be taken seriously. Now that we are established, we set out to modernize the logo to make it feel more friendly and approachable. While we explored many directions, ultimately we decided that we only needed an update, and not a full redesign. We worked with Eric Olson — whose typeface Klavika was used in the original logo — and developed a custom typeface to reflect where we are now and where we are headed.”

Reason behind the new logo

According to Facebook’s April fillings, more than 85 percent of the 1.44 billion Facebook users log into the social media from a mobile device, reports CNET. In the first quarter, the company earned revenue worth $3.32 billion through advertising, of which 73 percent of the revenue were generated from ads displayed on mobile devices.

Going by the numbers, Facebook’s users and advertisers are on mobile and now even its logo has been tweaked. As per Facebook, the new slim and sleek logo will not only be easier to read on mobile devices but will also show company’s approach towards its changing vision, CNET reported.
