Facebook remains to be on top in the social media category. However, the latest survey says that it's losing its glitter and seems to be less cool especially for teenagers. The latest report from Frank N. Magid Associates Inc. revealed that the percentage of teens from ages 13 to 17 who use Facebook in the United States apparently fell to 88 percent this year, Bloomberg reports.

Meanwhile, Twitter and other mobile messaging apps such as Snapchat is continuously increasing its popularity among teens where in the percentage leaped from 2 percent to 48 percent. Studies reveal that Facebook remains to be the top messaging app at present. However, 55 percent of Facebook Messenger users are those aged 37 years old and younger, while Snapchat and Kik users have younger users at 86 percent and 83 percent respectively.

According to another survey conducted last June by research firm Forrester, Facebook was found to be teens' favorite social networking site. Despite the result from the said research firm, there is no hiding that Facebook is failing to keep hold of its younger chunk of users.

CNET reported that aside from failing to keep the interest of younger users, the social media giant has also been caught in some privacy issues in the past. The company has received comments and criticisms with the additions and revisions that Facebook has made with its privacy policy. With all these, the social media giant is working on the concerns on privacy, but with the latest survey by Magid it proves that fans still doubt.

In addition, Facebook acquired WhatsApp and Instagram in its quest to diversify and widen its coverage. And slowly Facebook is seeing the positive effects of its big investments as recent surveys show that WhatsApp and Instagram happen to be the most popular media sites among teenagers nowadays.

Finally, Magid's survey to 1,934 people was made last September, but the results were based on smartphone users only, which means that the study pertains to a very small chunk of the total number of people using social media sites. The survey revealed that 18 percent of the survey participants use Snapchat, while 17 percent use Apple's iMessage. Meanwhile, 9 percent of the respondents use WhatsApp and 9 percent use Google's Hangouts.
