Originally starting out as a successful Facebook game, it seems that “Empires and Allies” ended up becoming a bigger success than previously expected. The social strategy game is now available on mobile devices as a free-to-play title with optional in-app purchases for those who want a number of specific advantages in “Empires and Allies.”

Developer Zynga has made a few changes for the “Empires and Allies” mobile version, some of which can be considered improvements. The graphics of the game have been given a boost, focusing more on realism rather than the cartoony version seen in the original Facebook social game. This is most likely due to the developers taking advantage of the more powerful capabilities of a mobile device.

According to Gamespot, Zynga hired a seasoned team of developers to work on “Empires and Allies” to make it a success. Mark Skaggs, the Vice President of Zynga, worked on the massively successful Facebook game “Farmville” and had a hand in the development of another Real Time Strategy game known as “Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth.”

It seems that Zynga is aiming for some of the older RTS fans with this game, as “Empires and Allies” features some old-school game mechanics that some veteran gamers will be happy to see. This involves making bases and growing units for battle, eventually being able to summon an army of tanks and helicopters to take care of the opposing force, while also attempting to defend their base of operations from the enemy.

The game has received a warm welcome from critics so far, with Pocket Gamer giving the “Empires and Allies” mobile version a silver award. The reviewer claimed that the game was solidly put together and played fairly well while also using the free-to-play model in a fair and balanced way.

Fans of the RTS genre can pick up “Empires and Allies” right now through their mobile device of choice. The game is available to iOS and Android users and is also a free download, with optional in-app purchases for faster building times and in-game advantages against the enemy.
