Mel Gibson is currently in Australia filming “Hacksaw Ridge,” the upcoming biopic about World War II Army Medic Desmond T. Ross, played by “The Amazing Spider-Man” star Andrew Garfield. Recently, “The Expendables” star turned one location in Sydney into an old American city.

Gibson was spotted on the set of “Hacksaw Ridge” in Richmond, New South Wales, which was transformed into the city of Lynchburg, Virginia, set in the 1940s. This is to recreate the hometown of the Conscientious Objector to win the Medal of Honour, which is the highest decoration in U.S. military.

Autumn leaves were scattered across the streets in the “Hacksaw Ridge” location in Richmond. Locals also tried to catch a glimpse of Gibson and the costumed extras of the film.

“We were told about two weeks ago that we were going to have a bit of activity here in the town and everyone’s been excited waiting for today,” shop owner Michael Bennett was quoted by 9News as saying.

Set to hit theatres in 2016, “Hacksaw Ridge” stars several Australian actors including Teresa Palmer, Sam Worthington, Firass Dirani and Ryan Corr. Palmer was recently seen on set in North West Sydney wearing a 1940s-style frock and velvet headpiece, according to Adelaide Now.

Gibson will only take the directorial role and will not be part of the cast of “Hacksaw Ridge.” The 2016 biopic marks Gibson's return to the director's chair since the action film “Apocalypto,” which he directed in 2006 and starred Raoul Max Trujillo, Gerardo Taracena and Dalia Hernandez.

In 2016, Gibson will also star in “Blood Father” opposite Elisabeth Rohm and Erin Moriarty. The action film is directed by Jean-Francois Richet and written by Peter Craig and Andrea Berloff, based on the novel by Peter Craig.

Meanwhile, it has yet to be confirmed when Gibson will reunite with his “The Expendables” co-stars Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Harrison Ford, Antonio Banderas, Jet Li, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren, Kelsey Grammer, Randy Couture and Ronda Rousey. The third instalment of the film franchise was released on Aug. 15, 2014.
