Travelling often takes its toll on the body. Sometimes it has adverse effects, too. It is important to take care of your body and health while you are travelling. Try to eat healthy and get lots of sleep to reduce the effects of travel. Here are a few tips on how to take care of your body and health when you're on the go.

  • Try to avoid packed or canned food as much as possible. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the journey, especially in the morning. Focus on intake of nutrients that are required for your body and that help in keeping you alert and active.
  • Keep away from drinking alcohol and aerated drinks. They will only end up making you feel thirstier. Having a beer once in a while would be fine.
  • Too much never does any good. Food that is high in salt content needs to be eliminated from your diet, especially in dinner or late night meals. It could lead to swollen ankles and feet. Salt, if taken more than the daily minimum amount required, can result in dehydration, fatigue and hunger.
  • If you can, always try to eat your meals around the same time every day. A little change is fine though. Refrain from eating food too late in the day. When travelling, it is best to eat small portions and avoid a hurried meal.
  • If you have the option of sleeping while on a journey, always use a pillow to support your neck. This will save you from any pains the next morning. Using some eye cream under your eyes will ensure you don't have puffy eyes the next day.

Whether you are travelling for business or pleasure, it's always useful to know how you can remain fit and not end up ignoring your health among all the flights, street food, last minute meals, sleep ins or sightseeing.

Do Your Homework

Look up the Internet to find running routes, parks, etc. at your vacation locale. You can wake up early in the morning and step out so it doesnt interfere with your itinerary. Whether you're at your hotel or out sightseeing, make it a point to ditch the elevator and take the stairs.

Get on the Treadmill

Almost all decent hotels boast of a gymnasium inside their premises. Take the opportunity and hop on the treadmill first thing in the morning or squeeze in some time in the evening to ward off the stress and get rid of those extra calories. While on vacation that should be more than enough for you to stay active. You don't want to spend hours sweating in the gym when you're visiting your dream destination.

Break Free - Take Up Adventure Sports

Every place has some interesting adventure sport to offer. Make full use of your vacation and find one that you would like to try. What's great is, these can be a substitute for all you're missing out in the gym. Activities like hiking, kayaking, mountaineering, paragliding or swimming can turn out to be great experiences, too.

Run, Run and Run Some More

If you head out for a run early in the morning, it won't interfere with your sightseeing, recreation, or work-related activities. It also leaves you fresh and energised for the rest of the day. If you like late night runs, make sure you don't eat much before you go out.

Get Massages

A welcome break from all the running, travelling and sightseeing on your journey, a massage can do wonders to relieve that stress. It can loosen up some tight muscles and stiff areas.

Take it Easy, You're On Vacation!

If you can't make enough time to exercise or run while on vacation, don't beat yourself up over it. You won't lose a lot of fitness with a week off from running.
