Apple is seen to remain as the global smartphone leader by end of March 2015 and will likely sustain the same performance for the rest of the year by advancing its iPhone 6S release date plans. Such move would turn back prospects of Samsung recovery, thanks to the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge.

A new report from South Korea is indicating that the Galaxy S6 will play a key role in determining which between Apple and Samsung will be crowned as the smartphone king this 2015. The crucial period will be the second quarter of the year, which will mark the release of the S6 and its S6 Edge sibling, Business Korea said.

Following the disappointment that came with the Galaxy S5 last year, the report noted that Samsung is regaining its confidence. Samsung’s S6, notably the prettier S6 Edge, has been reaping positive feedbacks and will likely outperform its immediate predecessor. But how exactly the upcoming handset will be received by consumers will not be known until Q2 2015 is wrapped up, the report added.

“The leader in the market will be decided only when the Galaxy S6 actually comes into the market,” Business Korea reported its industry sources as saying. That would mean that for the March quarter, Apple will continue to hold sway with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

Juggernaut

The Apple 2014 flagships are predicted to dominate the market by headlining a total of 54 million iPhone buys by close of March 2015. The report added that analysts’ forecasts are in the conservative realm so the numbers could still significantly climb – from 58 million and up.

But it could be an entirely different story by end of June. By that time, the S6 and S6 Edge would have been around close to three months and judging from the excitement that the handsets have generated so far, Samsung could be looking on a huge leap. That is in terms to what the Galaxy S5 had managed to deliver in the same period last year.

And the figures are likely far better as Business Korea suggested that a leadership shift in the market could happen in the next few months. Early reviewers and benchmark results have been favourable to the S6 and the S6 Edge, which could be the bases for this positive outlook given to Samsung lately.

Counter move

Apple, however, is unlikely to allow Samsung’s resurgence to happen unchallenged. To keep its throne, the tech giant could pull off a big surprise by unleashing the best weapon on its arsenal – the upcoming iPhone 6S and the 6S Plus. That would mean advancing the touchdown of the two devices.

An earlier iPhone 6S release date, while remote at this time, is possible if the recent rumours that volume production of the device will start May or June this year. That would position the iPhone 6 sequel for an August or September 2015 outing, giving Apple the last few months of the year to muster the sales numbers that would turn back Samsung’s spirited push.
