Polish developer Techland has a runaway success on its hands in open-world zombie survival game, “Dying Light.” The company has been releasing DLC packs and free patches to keep gamers interested, and a new announcement indicates full mod support is on the way.

“Developer tools for ‘Dying Light’ are coming and they’re almost there. We’ll be releasing them soon, but before that happens we want to invite you to a closed beta,” reads an announcement on the “Dying Light” Steam forums.

The post goes on to call for beta testers but warns that because the tools are still in development, testers should expect them to be rough around the edges. Gamers who wish to help provide feedback are encouraged to email the developers at devtools@techland.pl.

The impending release of “Dying Light” mod tools represents developer Techland’s dedication to providing post-launch support for the game. As previously reported, the studio recently released a new Hard Mode patch, which increased difficulty, fixed bugs and tweaked gameplay. The free Hard Mode patch also added new outfits, added a new weapon rarity level and gave gamers over 50 new weapons to slay zombie hordes.

Gamer response to “Dying Light” has been overwhelmingly positive, and Gamespot reports that the game sold more than 3.2M units within 54 days. These stats make “Dying Light” the most popular game in Techland’s history, eclipsing the 3M copies “Dead Island” sold within 90 days. The company also released an infographic on its official Twitter account, showing off some of the game’s more impressive stats, including the fact that a staggering 378,672,587 zombies had been killed since the game’s January 27 U.S. release date.

Though “Dying Light” is still a way off in reaching the 5M unit haul total of “Dead Island,” the addition of mod tools promises to give the game a shot in the arm. By utilising mods to games, creative gamers are able to add new gameplay features, weapons, maps and more, extending the shelf life of a game and increasing its visibility on sites like YouTube and Twitch. Techland hopes “Dying Light” can emulate the longevity of a title like Bethesda’s “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim,” which has seen an evergreen existence on the PC platform, thanks to the modding community.
