Police have searched the Dolphin Square, London apartment of Baron John Sewel, after a video obtained by British tabloid The Sun appeared to show him taking drugs with two prostitutes. Police entered the property after they announced that the allegations would be investigated, although no arrest has yet been made.

The Daily Mail reported that one of the officers who searched Lord Sewel’s apartment displayed a red battered ram, or an enforcer, while others left with transparent plastic bags containing evidence. The officers spent around 3 hours in the flat looking for evidence.

The Sun on Sunday published a few still photographs and the video that appears to show the 69 year old former Deputy Speaker snorting drugs with two sex workers. According to Skynews, a person possessing cocaine can be subjected to a maximum of 7 years' imprisonment. “A warrant under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 was today granted at Westminster Magistrates' Court,” confirmed Scotland Yard. “The warrant was executed at 6pm at an address in central London by officers from the Special Enquiry Team of the Homicide and Major Crime Command.”

After the story was published, Lord Sewel stepped down from his role as Deputy Speaker of the House Of Lords. He also wrote to the Clerk of Parliament requesting to take a leave of absence from the House ‘as soon as it can be arranged’. He also made it clear in his writing that he has no intention of returning to the House until current investigations have completed. Lord Sewel will not be granted any allowances as well.

Further in the footage, Lord Sewel was shown denigrating other politicians, including saying that David Cameron is the most facile, superficial Prime Minister there ever has been. Following an official complaint from the Liberal Democrats, Paul Kernaghan, the Lords Commissioner for standards, has been assigned to oversee the initial assessment of the allegations. Whether a full Parliamentary investigation will take place or not will be announced within 48 hours by Mr. Paul Kernaghan.
