“A Dog's Purpose” is all set to hit Australian theatres in a few months. As the wait draws near, its author has opened up about what motivated him in writing the story.

Los Angeles-based author Bruce Cameron has shared that it all started when his then girlfriend’s, Cathryn Michon, dog passed away. He explained that it was the first dog she ever had and she was not prepared for the overwhelming grief.

Cameron further shared that her girlfriend’s dog was named Ellie. Since it died, Michon vowed that she will never adopt another dog.

At that point, the author of “A Dog's Purpose” said their relationship has started to become serious. Cameron has a dog since he was eight years old. He confessed that he is the type who could never imagine not having a dog around.

“I told her a story about a dog that reincarnates, and remembers each life and eventually comes to conclude there must be a reason, a purpose, it keeps being born. Until it figures it out, it keeps being reincarnated,” Cameron told InsideEdition.com.

Cameron has come up with a more detailed retelling of the story that eventually became the New York Times bestseller, “A Dog's Purpose.” Cameron and Michon are now married.

Michon has agreed to adopt another dog. The couple named their pet, Tucker. Cameron shared that they rescued Tucker from euthanisation seven years ago.

“A Dog's Purpose” is under the direction of Lasse Hallström. The story centres on a devoted dog that realises the meaning of his own existence through the lives of humans that had him as their pet.

The movie was given a Jan. 27 release date in the US by Amblin Entertainment and Walden Media. The film will hit Australian theatres on April 6 according to Thereelbits.com.
