The series finale quickly presents what happens after Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter) gets shot by the Brain Surgeon. Deb gets better, even able to speak to Dexter about the monsters she feared in her childhood. Then she winds up in a coma just as a superstorm is about to strike Miami.

Dexter kills Oliver Saxon aka Daniel Vogel (Darri Ingolfsson). Lt. Angel Batista (David Zayas) and Det. Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington) declare self-defense despite questionable circumstances. Moments before the storm unleashes its fury, Dexter pulls the plug for Deb. He "buries" her into the sea.

Hannah McKay (Yvonne Strahovski) arrives in Argentina with Harrison, and later reads about the news that Dexter is dead. The series ends with an intriguing new life for Dexter (Michael C. Hall), triggering speculations of a possible spin off.

The "leaked spoilers" on Reddit got some things right: The Brain Surgeon dies. Deb dies. Dexter throws her remains off the Slice of Life. Dexter's boat is destroyed. Hannah and Harrison start a new life in Argentina. But one important detail has gone too far: Quinn does not become the new Dexter.

Dexter Series Finale: The Good, the Bad, the wrongs

For many fans, the death of Deb Morgan fits the big picture. Dexter acknowledges that he has ruined her life. Dex also realizes he has been longing to feel what "normal" people feel, and now he's had too much. Evelyn Vogel dies. Deb in coma. It's all too much for the man who's always thought he's a psychopath who couldn't bring himself to really care for anyone or anything. It turns out he's nothing like the Brain Surgeon.

The bad: Dexter Season 8 has been the weakest, least coherent season of the series. There have been unnecessary space fillers, too. Masuka's daughter, for one. The Hannah McKay distraction, or how things developed after she came back, has also not been entirely satisfying.

Despite mixed reviews from avid viewers of Dexter, the show will not be soon forgotten. Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter are such compelling actors. As the Morgans, they demonstrated the complexities of life and the stupid things people do to protect their relationships.
