The original "S.T.A.L.K.E.R." was considered to be one of the more underrated games in the first person shooter genre. Mixing elements from both role-playing games and survival horror games, the game offered some of the most in depth gameplay elements seen in an FPS at the time, such as environmental hazards and character interactions. While the game was criticized for having game breaking bugs it was still a moderate success.

In 2010 the developer of "S.T.A.L.K.E.R." GSC Game World was forced to shut down due to poor treatment from fans and publishers after the release of two sequels to "S.T.A.L.K.E.R." Soon after that there was a huge, messy fight regarding ownership of "S.T.A.L.K.E.R." along with various intellectual properties that were under development. Some of its developers formed 4A Games, the creators of the acclaimed "Metro" series while others formed Vostok Games who are currently working on a new game called 'Survarium."

Now in an interview with Games Industry, GSC Game World has announced its return with a brand new, full priced game coming from them. While there have been no details of the game revealed the company did state that it would please fans of the STALKER game. Original GSC member Valentine Yeltyshev spoke about the difficulties the team faced when making "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2" as he and the team realized that it would probably be out of date by the time it came out.

Yeltyshev also admitted that the first two sequels to "S.T.A.L.K.E.R." were closer to add-ons or expansion packs than full-blown sequels. "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2" would have been something different, but due to the lack of leadership going around GSC and the possible dated nature of the game they had to cancel the project. Yeltyshev also answered concerns about the controversy created by West Games and their intent to make a "S.T.A.L.K.E.R." game despite not owning the license.

According to Gamespot, West Games claimed to have copyrighted the name "STALKER Apocalypse," but was not out of the clear in terms of legality. "We would definitely win the legal action against them, but we won't start it." With a new game on the way and newly regained confidence it appears GSC won't be going anywhere.
