The Detroit Tigers set a new American League record for the longest shut-out streak, at 24 innings, on Thursday night. The Tigers had not allowed a single run through the first two games of the season, both against the Minnesota Twins, beating them 4-0 and 11-0. That superb form carried over through the first six innings of the third game in the series before the Tigers finally gave up an unearned run, but that was the only disappointment in a match they easily won 7-1.

The previous American League record stood at 22 innings, which was set by Chicago White Sox over 60 years ago in 1947. The current Tigers passed that mark when Shane Greene did not concede in the first six innings of the game. David Price and Anibal Sanchez had both come together to shut out the Twins in the first two games of the new season.

The Twins were 0-22 before scoring, beating the earlier franchise worst mark of 0-20. They were relieved when Joe Mauer scored after a walk and a one-out double by Kenny Vargas off an error from left fielder Yoenis Cespedes.

"The guys were joking around that at least we had one. We were down 22-0 for the season at that point, and you have to start somewhere," Twins manager Paul Molitor said after the game.

The Tigers kept Minnesota to just 14 hits through the three games of the series, allowing 14 singles and two doubles. They still haven’t allowed an earned run through the first three games of the season, and the Twins’ on-base percentage is just .172, league worst as of Thursday night.

The longest scoreless streak in Major League history is 32 innings according to STATS, which belongs to the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals. The Twins pitching was as bad as its batting on Thursday night, with Kyle Gibson allowing six runs on eight hits and walking five in just under six innings. Minnesota faces the White Sox next in a three game series while the Tigers take on the Cleveland Indians.
