Demi Lovato has posed nude and makeup-free for a new, non-photoshopped shoot for Vanity Fair magazine. The shoot reportedly took place a day after her great-grandfather passed away.

The 23-year-old songstress used her recent loss for the inspiration in her pictures, which were taken spontaneously by magazine's photographer Patrick Ecclesine, in a New York hotel. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past day, it’s that life is too short,” she told the photographer of Vanity Fair.

The songstress also talked about her upcoming album, “Confident,” which is scheduled to be released on Oct. 16. “I’m about to launch an album that finally represents who I truly am. How do I embrace this new chapter in my life? How do I really walk the walk? What does it mean to be confident? It means letting go, being authentic, saying I don’t give a f—, and this is who I am,” she added.

Just like her photoshoot, the album too shows the side of Lovato which is “real, liberated and free.” To represent her thought process vividly, Lovato wanted to do a photoshoot which was “totally raw and super-sexy.” At the same time, she also wanted to face the world with any makeup, retouching and clothing.

The “Cool for the Summer” singer, who suffered from eating disorders for many years, said it was a big achievement for her to pose nude for a magazine because it simply implies that she is now comfortable in her skin.

“It’s extremely important for me to even embrace my body and my sexuality with showing more skin – I think it’s great,” Lovato told the magazine in a previous interview.
